Building a calligraphy practice routine

A simple, repeatable structure for improving letterforms without burning out.

Building a calligraphy practice routine

Posted January 24, 2026

Goal: Improve consistency without making practice feel like homework.

1) Warm-up (5 minutes)

  • Basic strokes: upstroke, downstroke, oval, underturn, overturn
  • Focus on pressure control and rhythm

2) One letter family (10–15 minutes)

Pick one family (e.g., i, u, w, t) and drill it with the same slant and spacing.

3) Small words (10 minutes)

Write 6–10 short words that use that family. Keep the best 2 lines and date them.

4) One “finish” piece (optional)

Turn your practice into something presentable (a quote card, name tag, or envelope).

Tip: Post your weekly “best line” here — it’s the easiest way to see progress.
